We made our way north and west in the Dallas metro area to the Dallas Temple. Built in 1984, it is quite unique. With a darker colored roof and a long layout, it was an interesting change. We were very happy that there was a port-a-potty available as they had a crew working on new sprinklers on the grounds.
Our drive north into Oklahoma was easy driving with low traffic on the interstate. At Atoka, we turned on Highway 3 and headed to Ada. With a 65 zone, almost no traffic, a beautiful sunshiny morning and lots of green rolling hills virtually untouched by humans - it was a great experience. We were texting one of Nathan's former students (and a friend) Noel Figueroa at East Central University there to meet up with him at lunch. All went as planned and we took him to lunch at Pigskin's Barbecue. The meal was so cheap, the service very friendly, and the food incredible. We learned alot about the community of 11,000 from the owner and waitress and truly loved our slab of ribs we all shared.
Noel took us on a tour of the university and all of us really enjoyed it. With a student population of 3 to 4000, it is a small and very tidy little campus. We don't know the cost of room, but tuition is 4500 dollars for the year with board is less than 2000. On our tour, Noel bought "Mr. Niles" a banner for his classroom in 29 Palms! Tim was very impressed with old yet very well-kept buildings and facilities around campus. Noel was so happy to see us and we had a great time!
After saying goodbye, we headed straight north on Highway 99 to the I-44 tollroad into Tulsa. The highway portion was more of the same great scenery with very little traffic and great roads (mainly divided highway for 80 miles). We did hit a 10-minute train wait right before the interstate, but that gave us more time to look around. The drive into Tulsa went very nicely with no clogged traffic and we pulled into our first Quality Suites. After a relaxing swim, we headed next door to an IHOP. For the first time of the trip, all of the family each ate all of their food!
