After awaking before the sun, Timothy and Nathan went for a nice morning run in Keokuk. After checking out of our smoky (and recouped for free) room, we turned our bloodshot eyes to the north up the river to Nauvoo. After again going into the Church of Christ Visitors' Center, we were redirected to our center further back from the main road.
We arrived right as all of the missionaries serving in Nauvoo walked out from their early-morning meeting - what a sight! We enjoyed all of the layout and information at the height of Nauvoo's boom and ordered tickets for the wagon ride around the town.
All went well on the ride and we got some good ideas of what to circle on the pamphlet for later. Sariah really loved the 2 big draft horses pulling the wagon. She and Samuel got to pet the horses' noses afterwards and loved it, too.
The Browning gunshop was our favorite family stop. We enjoyed learning gunmaking and about his background in joining the Church in the area and then moving to Nauvoo. The cellar was very inventive for the time with both food and water storage below the kitchen.
Our last stop was the Scovil Bakery. Although it was a short tour, we were impressed with the fact that Brother Scovil founded his bakery and was very successful with no background in baking. Due to his life's situations, he never did it again after 4 years of full-time baking. This brought up the point to us that many members of that time did what was necessary for the good of all. Do we all?...
We finished our stay in Nauvoo with a nice buffet-style meal at Grandpa Joe's Cafe. Our drive down to Quincy, then to Hannibal and down to Saint Louis entailed 2 major thunderstorms and then nice driving the second half of the trip. We had no problems with traffic coming into Saint Louis during rush hour. Looking forward to a big and memorable day tomorrow...
