On Saturday, we again had another late start...we went to the Detroit Temple on the northwestern side of the city and got to see the Dream Cruise of oldie cars before the big parade started later in the day. We finally got out of the area at noon and headed east on the 96 to Lansing. We played football on the lawn and got some pictures. We liked the fact it felt like a smaller city and the drivers were a lot more courteous than Detroit.
The drive from Lansing southwest to Indiana was very picturesque with a great road, very light traffic and a mixture of farms, deciduous forest, pines and marshes...this was Nathan's favorite stretch of the trip as we made great time and had some wide open spaces.
We are actually staying in Mishawaka - the town immediately to the east of South Bend and arrived at our resort at 4:15 before catching up laundry and eating a stay-home dinner as a family for the first time of the trip, which was very nice.
Sunday morning, we slept in, ate breakfast together and then went to sacrament meeting in the South Bend Ward. The only Church building in the area is less than one mile away on backroads and we arrived very early. Bishop Worthen, his wife and others were very friendly. However, we decided not to stay after sacrament due to the visiting hours only running until 4 pm on the Notre Dame campous. We hurried back, changed and headed to lunch at Culver's, which is a family fast food chain with some uniquenesses. The kids got some sports equipment there and Solinda loved her frozen custard - which is much better than ice cream!!
Notre Dame's campus is amazing and covers 1250 acres. Although we only walked the central area of it, we were amazed at how large and picturesque it is. The Basilica is incredibly ornate and quite old, none of which we knew. The stained glass windows and paintings are very detailed and gorgeous. A very impressive and beautiful building - one of the top architectural masterpieces of the the continent! The golden dome is beautiful and we enjoyed the Grotto, where all of the candles really impressed Sariah and she wanted to light one. We ended looking at the lake, art museum and football stadium through the north tunnel. The video in the visitors' center was very touching - as we learned the wide variety of student population from all 50 states and all over the world. The university still makes sure as much of the financial cost is alleviated as possible for all...truly inspiring! Tim was very impressed by the wall of donors to scholarships, work-to-earn grants and fellowships over the years. Many caring and giving people call Notre Dame home...
The evening was spent as a family watching movies and condensing luggage for the next 2 days as the schedule will be tight...this was a good rest stop!
