(7/31) An interesting and unique day. After we checked out and loaded the van, we were able to store it and the valets brought it back to us anytime before 3 pm. We rode the shuttle to Union Station then hopped on the Bus line to the Library of Congress and then the Capitol building.
The Library of Congress is immense and very artistic in nature with quotes from Philosophy throughout the building. There are paintings of many great things and the names of great American authors and philophers throughout. We enjoyed Jefferson's library and then headed downstairs to find the tunnel to the Capitol. Before we entered the tunnel, we found a room that covers the history of comic and satire - with a big focus on Bob Hope. He shook hands with 8 presidents and is popular with 2 full generations of Americans and their soldiers. We had a nice cool walk through the tunnel to Exhibition Hall, which talks about all the branches of government in great depth and the history of our country as it relates to them. The kids enjoyed the interactive displays and there was so much to learn for all of us.
We shuttled back to the hotel and then got the van and headed south past the White House so Sam could see where Trump lives and then across the river to Arlington National Cemetery. Sam and Tim were both very excited to see the tomb of the unknown soldier. We hiked up in the heat and then waited about 15 minutes for the changing of the guard. While waiting, we heard a band playing and then on our hike back, we heard a 21-gun salute for the burial of a fallen soldier oversees. A very good experience for the boys to see and realize the cost of our liberties.
We then fought through rush-hour traffic to Baltimore for our new hotel and got to bed at a good hour for the girls, while the boys played cards with Brad and Jen.
