(7/25) Another cool day today with a high of about 75 and no sun except for about 10 minutes before the Yankee game.
We spent the entire day without the van. A 15-minute walk to the Metro station got us on the green line 6 and we rode the express clear down to Lower Manhattan, got off and walked to the food district for some authentic Bavarian food. Very delicious.
A shorter walk then followed to Ground Zero of Towers 1 and 2. We saw both craters-turned-into-fountains and held moments of silence at each. It was a very emotionally valuable experience and was very good for the kids to be there and contemplate what happened since none of them remember it.
We went the next block over and went up the Freedom Tower, which has only been open for about 2 years. It had the fastest elevator ever and went so fast our ears had to be continually popped. This elevator had an incredible video presentation on the walls as we rode and covered the past and the near future of the scenery.
At the top, we had incredible views and got the video presentation on a computer which told us stories about key buildings on the skyline in any direction. All 7 of us got time to look at whatever we wanted. The tower is built with the building the exact same height as the original Trade Center towers with a tower extending to a height of 1776 feet from the ground. We all loved the different views of the Empire State building, the Stature of Liberty and Ellis Island, along with the New Jersey side, Brooklyn and the islands of Coney and Staten. Breathtaking!
We had about an hour and a half leeway until batting practice and slowly made our way through the streets to a terminal for the Metro and then headed to Yankee stadium for batting practice. We were close to getting 2 balls and Sariah it - enjoyed even though she didn't get a ball.
The game was a 4-2 win for the Yankees over the Cincinnati Reds. We got to see a very unique triple play with the bases loaded and Montgomery (Yankee) had a no-hitter for 5 innings. Only one home run was hit and the lights in the whole stadium went disco-style. The song "New York New York" played afterwards and led to a very unique, festive and relaxing atmosphere not yet experienced.
This was a fitting end to a great experience in New York. It is a city with many polite people who have a great relationship with their police and each other. Many great scenes and situations of friendliness, kindness and comradarie were observed all 3 days in the subways and trains, in restaurants and in driving (Bronx only) as well...A much more pleasant experience than we all anticipated!
